Once
a penal settlement, Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is
today a popular tourist destination. It is an ideal base for touring the archipelago.
The
Cellular Jail
Originally a
British penal settlement, the cellular Jail epitomizes all the misery, the trails
and tribulations faced by the Indian freedom fighters, many of whom were sent here
to serve life sentences. Now a national monument, the Cellular Jail has a museum
where exhibits depict prison life in the early 1900’s. To inculcate a feeling of
reverence for those brave patriots a sound and light show is screened. Hindi shows
at 6 p.m. every day and English Shows on Wednesday, Saturdays and Sundays at 7.15
p.m. Check for any change in timings from the Information Office of the Andaman
Administration.

The Mahatma
Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor is at a distance of 29 kms from Port Blair
covering an area of 281.5 sq kms. Coral reefs, exotic varieties of beautifully
coloured coral fishes and ot
her marine life abound the area. The area abounds in colorful varieties of coral
reef fishes like the clown fish, butterfly fish, surgeonfish, angelfish,
parrot-fish, bat fish and Groupers. Water monitor lizard and sea snakes such as
the banded sea snake also have their home here.
Andaman Water Sports Complex
This unique complex, first of its kind in India, has all possible aqua sports
facilities including safe water sports and adventure sports with sea water
swimming pool etc. Safe water sports are paddleboats, rowboats, glass-bottom
boats, aqua-glide, kayaks, water cycle, etc. Adventure water sports include water
skiing, wind surfing, speed boats, sail boats, para-sails, gemini boats, glass
bottom boats, water scooter, kayak etc.
New Amusement Park, Marina Park
The Amusement Park has Giant Wheel, Para-trooper, Dragon Coaster etc. for children
and the adults alike. There is also a miniature botanical garden called Marina
Park.
Rajiv Gandhi Velodrome
Rajiv Gandhi Velodrome at Port Blair is of international standard and fourth
largest in the country.
