Once a penal settlement, Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is today a popular tourist destination.  It is an ideal base for touring the archipelago.  

The Cellular Jail

Originally a British penal settlement, the cellular Jail epitomizes all the misery, the trails and tribulations faced by the Indian freedom fighters, many of whom were sent here to serve life sentences. Now a national monument, the Cellular Jail has a museum where exhibits depict prison life in the early 1900’s. To inculcate a feeling of reverence for those brave patriots a sound and light show is screened. Hindi shows at 6 p.m. every day and English Shows on Wednesday, Saturdays and Sundays at 7.15 p.m. Check for any change in timings from the Information Office of the Andaman Administration.

Museum

The Marine Museum exhibits almost 350 species of marine life while the anthropological museum displays the tools, implements, art and handicraft of the tribals in the territory.

Corbyn’s Cove

About 4 kms. from Port Blair airport is a plam fringed beach ideal for swimming, surfing and sunbathing.

The Chatham Saw Mill

The largest saw mill in Asia it employees 1000 workers, while its showroom in Haddo exhibits some of the best species of wood in the world.

Zoological Garden

This is a mini zoo which houses some of the rare animals and birds that are peculiar to the Islands .

Mount Harriet

Ideally suited for trekking, Mount Harriet , a picnic spot par excellence offers a breathtaking view of Port Blair. Situated opposite Chatham Island at 365 metres above sea level, it can be reached either by a two hour drive from Port Blair, or a ten minute ferry from Marine to Hope Town and then a half hour walk to the top.

Sippighat Farm

14 km. from Port Blair, this is a Government Agricultural & Demonstration farm spread over an area of 80 acres.

Dilthaman Tank

Situated in the heart of Port Blair this was once the only source of potable water in town. Now it has been developed into a beautiful picnic spot with water sports facilities.

Chidiya Tapu

Also known as Bird Island this is the Southern most tip of South Andaman. An hours drive from Port Blair, this place is famous for its enchanting view and is a spot for picnicking and line fishing.

Wandoor Beach

Situated on the west coast of South Andaman, it is a beautiful place for diving, swimming and picnicking. The wooden jetty at Wandoor is the boarding place for ferries to the islands of Jolly Buoy, Red Skin and other islands. Now it has also become a Marine National Park .

Viper Island

Close to the Haddo Wharf , Viper Island was used to harbour convicts before the construction of the Cellular Jail.

Ross Island

Situated south of the picturesque Port Blair Harbour it was the residence of the British Chief Commissioner. A ferry take visitors over from Phoenix Bay .  

M. G. Marine National Park

The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor is at a distance of 29 kms from Port Blair covering an area of 281.5 sq kms. Coral reefs, exotic varieties of beautifully coloured coral fishes and ot her marine life abound the area. The area abounds in colorful varieties of coral reef fishes like the clown fish, butterfly fish, surgeonfish, angelfish, parrot-fish, bat fish and Groupers. Water monitor lizard and sea snakes such as the banded sea snake also have their home here.

Andaman Water Sports Complex

This unique complex, first of its kind in India, has all possible aqua sports facilities including safe water sports and adventure sports with sea water swimming pool etc. Safe water sports are paddleboats, rowboats, glass-bottom boats, aqua-glide, kayaks, water cycle, etc. Adventure water sports include water skiing, wind surfing, speed boats, sail boats, para-sails, gemini boats, glass bottom boats, water scooter, kayak etc.

New Amusement Park, Marina Park

The Amusement Park has Giant Wheel, Para-trooper, Dragon Coaster etc. for children and the adults alike. There is also a miniature botanical garden called Marina Park.

Rajiv Gandhi Velodrome

Rajiv Gandhi Velodrome at Port Blair is of international standard and fourth largest in the country.
