Named after the God of Valour, the coastal city of Vishakapatam was, a long time ago, a small fishing village. It was transformed by the British into a port town . Today, it has the distinction of being one of the finest sea resorts, dotted with several secluded beaches. You can also see the country’s largest ship building yard here.

Go beach hopping – from the Ramakrishna Beach to Lawsons Bay, further down to the unspoiled Rishikonda Beach (8 kms away) and all the way to the Bheemunipatnam Beach (24 kms away).

Fun thing to do in and around Vishakapatnam!

• Tickle the Dolphin’s Nose: a rocky dolphin-shaped promontory about 174 m high and 358 m above sea level.
• Check out the birds and the beasts at the Indira Ghandi Zoological Park . For some ‘fishy’ tales, visit the Aquarium!
• Climb a hill! The Ross Hill is the highest hill o the Eastern Ghats . The other two hillocks in the vicinity are Dargakonda  and the Sri Venkateshwarakonda.
• Drop by at Simhachalam, about 16 kms north-east of Vishakapatnam. The famous 11^th century temple here is dedicated to Lord Narasimha.
• Drive along one of the India from Vishakapatnam to Bheemunipatnam, a good 25 kms away. Here are remains of a Dutch settlement.
• Do some serious birdwatching at Kondakarla (48 kms) – a picnic spot with a bird sanctuary.
• Explore the fascinating Borra Caves , 90 kms from Vishakapatnam. About a million years old, these caves have magnificent stalactite and stalagmite formations.
  Camp out! The Nature Camp at Tyda, on the Vishakapatnam-Araku route, is an eco-tourism destintation.
• Go trekking in the sylvan splendour of the Araku Valley (112 kms), situated at an altitude of 950 m.
