Just 51 km from the ‘houseboat city’ of Srinagar is Kashmir ’s most popular all weather resort – Gulmarg. Literally translated, Gulmarg means a meadow of flowers, and it was undoubtedly its pristine beauty that enthused the British to select it as a summer resort. 

Flanked by the Apherwat Mountains and the Khoilanmarg ridge and glacier, Gulmarg is located at an altitude of 8,799 feet. Most of the settlements in the township, which comprise of a small bazaar, a number of hotels and a few quaint cottages, are on the rim of the flower filled basin which give it its name.

It has lovely walks through dense pine forests teeming with birds and well maintained tracks for day treks to be frozen lake of Alpather at 12,000 feet, and to the lush glade at Khilanmarg.  Trout fishing is possible in the nearby streams, and a good stock of horses and ponies are readily available for long and short equestrian forays.

Not much is left of British Gulmarg except for St. Marys Church, a weather beaten cemetery and the Nedous Hotel. Gulmarg has changed with the times. 

Gulmarg has not only the highest , but also one of the most scenic and sporting golf courses in the world. 

Beside golfing , fishing ,Gulmarg is well suited for learning skiing. It has some of the best slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers, all serviced by ski and chair lifts." Although it's true that the short, gentle slopes in the Highlands.
