Karwar

Just south of Goa, the charming coastal town of Karwar , situated near the mouth of the Kali Nadi, has all the makings of a perfect holiday. 

The Devbagh Beach here is said to have inspired Rabindranath Tagore to pen his first play. Karwar also has a Port protected from harsh winds by five islands. 

 

Fun things to do in and around Karwar!

  • Watch the sunset from the Kali Nadi Bridge , 3 kms north of the town.
  • Go sightseeing. There’s the Sadashivgad Hill Fort with a Durga Temple , the unique Octagonal Church , the 300 year old Venkatarama Temple and the Naganatha Temple .
  • Go rock-climbing at Yana (60 kms) – a deserted township with unique rock formations.
  • Watch waters fall! At the Magod Falls, Lalguli Falls, Mailmane Falls, the Shivganga Falls and the magnificent Jog Falls (the highest waterfalls in India), which are about 60kms from Honnavar.
  • Rejuvenate your body and soul in Beach & Temple Country, picturesque towns with unspoilt beaches and ancient temples: Gokarna (60 kms), Bhatkal (135 kms) and Murdeshwar .
  • Walk on the wild side at the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary (93 kms), home to tigers, panthers, barking deer, sloth bear, elephants, sambar, chital, gaur, wild dogs and wolves. The best time to visit the 834 sq. km Sanctuary is between December and May.
  • Worship at the famous Marikamba Temple at Sirsi (116 kms).
How to  get there
Karwar is a main station on the Konkan Railway, so most express trains stop here. Karwar is also well connected by road to Goa, Belgaum , Hubli-Dharwar , Mangalore, Mysore .
Mangalore

Mangalore – 357 kms west of Bangalore – is the District Headquarters of Dakshina Kannada and the perfect entry point to Beach Country, with its virgin and unexplored beaches. You have the Ullal Beach with casuarinas groves in Mangalore, the Malpe Beach (66 kms north) and the scenic beach at Maravanthe. 

Fun things to do in and around Mangalore!

  • Take in a Yakshagana performance – an elaborate dance form unique to this region.
  • Watch the Kambala ( Buffalo Race).
  • Sample spicy seafood delicacies and vegetarian meals liberally garnished with coconut. Not to be missed is the Patrode, a special dish prepared by steaming stuffed Colocasia leaves.
  • Visit the 1000 pillared Jain shrine at Moodabidri (35 kms north-east) and the 452 ft tall monolithic statue of Bahubali at Karkala (52 kms north-east).
  • Go beach-hopping! You have the Ullal Beach with casuarinas groves in Mangalore, the Malpe Beach (66 kms north) and the scenic beach at Maravanthe.
  • Pack a picnic hamper and take a boat to St. Mary’s Island , right across Malpe.
  • Take the Temple Tour- the Durga Parameshwari Temple at katil (27 kms east), the Krishna Temple at Udupi (58 kms), the Mookambika Temple at Kollur (140 kms north), and the Manjunatha Temple at Dharmasthala (75 kms east), Kukke Subramanya Temple at Subramanya (about 85 kms).
  • Watch the glorious sunset at Agumbe (114 kms) – a place of many scenic delights.
