Kochi - Queen of the Arabian Sea

Kochi or Cochin is a port city is located on a cluster of islands and narrow peninsulas with rich past & a bustling present .It is renewed as the Queen of the Arabian Sea  It has been the business hub of the region from very early days . The Chinese , Jews , Arabs , & Europeans come here to trade and their influence on Kochi & its people is still evident . Old tiled houses built in the Chinese pagoda style , the famous Chines fishing nets , colonial building , synagogues and mosques all tell the fascinating story of this harbour town .
The harbour is still at the heart of the city and pepper , sea food , rubber & coir are exported from here . Despite of this Kochi is an attractive city and the serene back-waters golden sunssets lagoons overhung with feathery coconut palms , picturesque islands. Vypeen , Willingdon, Ramanthuruth , Vallapadam & Bolghatty -all contribute to its beautiful cityscape. The interesting Jewish synagogue the oldest in India , the Mattancherry Palace of the former maharajas , also known as the Dutch Palace , old British Churches , the Bolghatty Palace once the mansion of the British Resident and now a hotel , are still worth seeing and make a visit to Kochi a unique experience .

Places of Interest 

Bolghatty Palace

Built by the Dutch in 1744, this palace is on Bolghatty island, The building was once a Governor's palace, for the Dutch and later the home of the British Governors. has been converted to a hotel run by the Kerala Tourishm Development Corporation (KTDC). The island has a tiny golf course and the panoramic views of the port and the harbour.

Jewish Synagogue

Jewish Synagogue is located near the Dutch Palace in Mattancherry.The synagogue, built in 1568, is magnificently decorated by Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers.

Mattancherry Palace  
 
This palace was built by Portugese& lotar on presented to the King of Kochi  The palace has a fine collection of mural paintings depicting scenes from the Hindu epics Mahabharatha and Ramayana.
St. Francis Church
It is one of the oldest church built where Vasco da Gama, the Portugese trader was buried.
 
Museum of Kerala History
The history & culture of Kerla along with many life size statues of many famous personalities and several paintings caaaaaan be seen here .
 
Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary
 
It situated right in the heart of Kochi city next to the High Court.It is the home of many exotic and rare varieties of migratory and resident birds.
 
Willingdon Island 

A manmade island named after Lord Willingdon a former British Viceroy to india. it is connected to the mainland by road-cum-railway Venduruthy Bridge Cochin Harbour, , major trading centers, offices etc. are situated at Willingdon Island.

Marine Drive

The bustling backwaters, dotted with fishing boats, speedboats, ships, tankers and passenger boats, can be observed from this walkway that lines the coast.
Fun things to do in and around Kochi!
  • Take a Walking Tour through Fort Cochin. The one and a half tour will cover impressive sights including Chinese Fishing Nets, Santa Cruz Basilica, St. Francis Church, etc. Don’t miss the Fort Kochi Beach.
  • Do more sightseeing! Visit the Mattancherry Palace. Jewish Synagogue, Museum of Kerala History (10 kms), Hill Palace Museum (12 lms).
  • Take a ferry to the Vypeen and Gundu Islands.
  • Watch dolphins at the Cherai Beach (45 kms from Ernakulam). This lovely beach is ideal for swimming too.
  • Take off a picnic at Athirampally Waterfalls (78 kms).
  • Live in a well-furnished houseboat on the Vembanad Lake at Kumarakom (90 kms).
  • Enjoy a fresh cuppa at Munnar (135 kms), a hill station surrounded by tea estates, lakes and forests.
