Situated
on the banks of the Cauvery River, Tiruchirapalli provides a perfect blend of
history, tradition and religion. Trichy’s landscape is dominated by the Rock
Fort. Once the citadel of the Chola kings, the fort has seen the passing of
dynasties. Ruled in turn by the Pallavas and then the Pandyas, the present fort
was built by the Nayak rulers of Madurai.
Srirangam
(5Kkm), A temple town close by , is Trihy's main attractin . The 13th century
temple complex with its 21 gopurams is set on an island in the river Cavery.
Dedicated to the Lord Ranganathaswamy , the temple noted for its beautiful
sculpture.
Trichy
is also the hub of industrial and commercial activities and is easily accessible
from most towns in Tamil Nadu.

Rock Fort offers a spectacular view of the town. The Vinayaka (Ganesha) Temple are
worth a visit.
Tiruvanaikkavai
is 7 km away. At the Jambukesswara Temple here, Lord Shiva is worshipped in the
form of water as he is the Lord of the five eternal elements of the universe.
The
Government Museum has fine bronze and stone sculptures.

Anicut (Kallanai) (24 km.): An ancient dam built across the cauvery by Karikala
Chola in 2 AD was later strengthened from time to time.
Mukkombu
(Upper Anicut) (18 km.): The River Kollidam branches off here from the Cauvery.

Vayaloor
(8 km): There is a temple here to the lord Murugan.
Samayapuram
(20 km): known for its temples to goddess Mariamman.
Viralimalai
(30 km): A temple to Lord Subramanya is situated on a hillock. There is also a
peacock sanctuary here.
Sittannavasal
(58 km): This is the site of an ancient Jain monastery with fine fresco paintings
in a cave. It is also noted for its pre-historic burial grounds.
Narthamali
(37 km): An unusual temple, circular in shape, is perhaps one of the earlist of
structural stone temples. A cave temple is also found here.
Elakurichi
has no old church built by the famous Catholic missionary, Constantine Joseph
Beschi.
Puliancholai
(72 km): A beautiful picnic spot, it is located in the foothills of the Kolli
range.
Kodumbalur
(42 km): A little town famous for its shrines.

Kovil: This ancient Shiva temple is worth visiting. It is noted for its graceful
life-size sculptures.
